How Do We Operate?
We accomplish our goals by applying a very simple approach; co-operation. We all learned it from Sesame Street, but seem to have forgotten how powerful a force it can be. Big problems can be made into little ones if you are willing to take things step by step. The seemingly overwhelming global environmental problems, from climate change to smog to water pollution, seem insurmountable when a person considers their own, seemingly insignificant contribution to solving them. In effect, the "What difference does it make?" sydrome. Sustainable Ottawa is the solution to that question.
So what are we?
We get you the environmental products you want (or should get) at lower prices. For way less than the price of a Costco membership, you get lower prices on things that will actually save you money.
We are a new breed of Co-op. We act as a facilitator. We are business and people friendly. We are professional. We understand that sustainability involves the balance of environment and economy. We are about positive action and reaffirming that TOGETHER is the way forward. Since we are your friends, neighbours, and co-workers you can ask your questions to people that you trust. Wouldn't it be nice to get honest answers from people not trying to sell you something?
What we are not
In the environmental non-profit sector, there is a huge range of well meaning organizations that are working towards making a positive change. Some are focussed on education, some on political activism and lobbying, while others are the tree planters and wildlife protectors. We are none of these things. You won't see us marching in protests or using our influence in the political arena. We won't be looking over your shoulder and tut-tutting if you happen to use a non-reusable coffee cup.
So why bother?
The more people that get involved, the stronger our position becomes. A larger membership base means that supporting businesses are more willing to negotiate for preferential pricing. More people getting the word our in their communities means that you can see the environmental benefits from our actions, and that is how we can all make a difference, one person at a time.
